Brake Fade, Heat & Downgrade Braking

What is brake fade?

  • A.A normal increase in stopping power after repeated stops
  • B.The sound brakes make when new linings are installed
  • C.A delay caused only by low air pressure
  • D.Loss of braking power that occurs when the brakes get so hot that friction between the linings and drum drops
Correct answer

D. Loss of braking power that occurs when the brakes get so hot that friction between the linings and drum drops

Why

Heat is the enemy of friction, and overheated linings cannot grip the drum as they did when cool. Fade can appear gradually on a long grade until even a hard pedal application produces little slowing.
