Shifting, Gauges & Engine Controls

What is double-clutching in a manual truck transmission?

  • A.Pressing the clutch twice as fast as possible
  • B.Using two clutch pedals at once
  • C.Shifting without ever using the clutch
  • D.A shifting method where the clutch is pressed once to come out of gear and again to go into the next gear, with engine speed matched in neutral
Correct answer

D. A shifting method where the clutch is pressed once to come out of gear and again to go into the next gear, with engine speed matched in neutral

Why

In a non-synchronized truck gearbox the driver must match shaft speeds by working the clutch at both steps of the shift. Done correctly, the gear engages without grinding because the engine rpm in neutral was set to what the new gear needs.
