Air Compressor, Governor & Reservoirs

What does it mean when the compressor cuts out normally at the top of the range?

  • A.The engine should be shut off immediately
  • B.The tanks are empty and must be refilled by hand
  • C.The spring brakes have just applied
  • D.Tank pressure has reached the governor's maximum and the compressor unloads until pressure falls to cut-in
Correct answer

D. Tank pressure has reached the governor's maximum and the compressor unloads until pressure falls to cut-in

Why

Cut-out is a normal, healthy event the driver may hear as the compressor unloads and the dryer purges. The system is then coasting on stored air until use drops pressure to cut-in again.
