Fifth Wheel & Coupling Steps

If the trailer is too low when you back under it, what can happen?

  • A.Nothing, low trailers couple more easily
  • B.The kingpin will always find the jaws
  • C.The tractor frame or fifth wheel can strike the trailer, and the kingpin may miss or damage the apron
  • D.Only the mud flaps can be damaged
Correct answer

C. The tractor frame or fifth wheel can strike the trailer, and the kingpin may miss or damage the apron

Why

A low trailer puts its apron in the path of the tractor frame and tires instead of on top of the fifth wheel. Raising the trailer to the correct height before backing prevents that contact damage.
