Uncoupling Steps & Safety

Before lowering the landing gear to uncouple, what should you do to take pressure off the locking jaws?

  • A.Pull forward hard against the kingpin
  • B.Shake the trailer with quick steering
  • C.Ease pressure by gently backing the tractor against the kingpin, then set the parking brake
  • D.Raise the trailer with the landing gear under load first
Correct answer

C. Ease pressure by gently backing the tractor against the kingpin, then set the parking brake

Why

Pressure jammed against the jaws makes the release handle almost impossible to pull and can damage the mechanism. Backing gently centers the kingpin and frees the jaws to open.
