Coupling Basics

After coupling, why must you get out and visually inspect the fifth wheel jaws and release handle?

  • A.Only a direct look confirms the jaws are closed around the kingpin shank and the handle is in the locked position
  • B.The inspection is only to check for grease stains
  • C.Looking is required only at night
  • D.The dashboard light already proves the lock
Correct answer

A. Only a direct look confirms the jaws are closed around the kingpin shank and the handle is in the locked position

Why

Gauges and feel cannot prove a positive lock, and a high hook can look coupled from the cab. Checking that there is no gap between apron and fifth wheel and that the jaws grip the shank, not the head, of the kingpin prevents a dropped trailer.
